The air's electric buzz of excitement, heavy nerves, and tension is palpable, while the athletes warm up. People chattering, running shoes shuffling, and occasional shouts from coaches fill the space as the athletes stay loose. Silent anticipation all around, and suddenly, BANG!, the race has begun. Everyone bolts forward, runners elbowing, shoving, and pushing, to put themselves in the best position for the race. With the 2024 Cross Country season beginning to unfold, we’re already embarking on a thrilling adventure-packed season with potential and excitement. Under the guidance of Head Coach Anthony Nunez and Assistant Coach Bradley Chatfield, the Buffaloes look to have another great year. The team’s success is built on a foundation of hard work and commitment. Throughout the summer, practices have had athletes focusing on endurance and speed.
When Coach Nunez was asked what he is expecting from his team this year, he said he wants his athletes to show up, work hard, be good teammates, and with those core values he believes they will have a successful season. He says practices have been great, and as a coach, he has to balance the workload based on those who put in the effort over the summer and the ones who didn’t. If they stay consistent, they will see results. Results might not qualify you to state, but using the core values the athletes have gained from being a part of cross country and applying them to their everyday lives is something he finds very important. He says he wants to help his athletes have successful futures.
Last year was incredible for the team, with the girls' team not only winning the Home meet but also making it to State after strong performances at Regionals. We saw individual runners excel throughout the season, adding to the success. The team has 13 high school runners out, meaning they have enough athletes to have a full boys and girls varsity team.
Looking towards the rest of this season, Coach Nunez says the biggest area of growth from last year to this year is commitment to the program. In the past, athletes have struggled to show up to Saturday practices, with the increasing number of athletes showing up to completely optional practices, shows that they are more committed.
The team has already had some outstanding results this season, Ellie Callaway placed 8th at Wamego and Dakota Peters 33rd. At Clay Center, Dakota Peters placed 15th. As they continue to defy expectations, all eyes will be on their upcoming races to see if they can turn their goals into reality. Fans and supporters will eagerly anticipate each race, cheering on the athletes as they aim to surpass their personal records and inspire the next generation of runners. The ultimate goal is not only to achieve remarkable results but also to cultivate a legacy of sportsmanship and success that will resonate for years to come.
